“Okay, I am really not happy right now,” Sasha said, sipping her iced tea through a straw. She glared at the straw.

“I’m not either,” Astrid said. They were at a bar and grille on the edge of a public park by the lake. The scenery was beautiful. But she was too keyed up to even consider ordering lunch. Her stomach was doing flips worthy of an aerialist.

“You of all people should be anti-straw.”

Astrid stared at Sasha. “That’s what you’re unhappy about?”

“The turtles, AB. Think of the turtles.”

She was a turtle lover. She couldn’t deny it. She dug in her bag, pulled out a metal straw and tossed it at Sasha. “Here, use this.”

“Well, it’s too late now. I already unwrapped this one. It’s destined for ocean waters already.”

Astrid couldn’t see Sasha’s eyes at the moment. They were currently hidden behind enormous lime green designer sunglasses, which contrasted against her dark skin. Always fashionable, frequently sarcastic, Astrid wasn’t sure if Sasha was being serious or not.

“That’s your big concern right now? Not the fact that I’m engaged to Jesse Lambert?” she asked, feeling a little hysterical even saying that out loud.

Sasha made a pfft sound. “Please. Your father is seriously not going to lose the opportunity to have Jesse playing on the team just because he owned your pussy last night.”

The wording caught her off guard. It also reminded her of how he had done exactly that. He had owned her pussy. “That’s a very distracting way to put it, thank you.” Her cheeks felt hot and it wasn’t the August sun. She stuck her water glass to her forehead.

“My point is, your father isn’t where he is because he’s stupid or emotional. He is just pissed right now. Tomorrow he’ll be over it. I don’t know shit about hockey, but I do know that your father is going to wake up tomorrow and be in control of himself.”

Sasha had to be right. Right? Her father had just been blindsided and Jesse was just panicking. Both would calm down and this would blow over. Then what?

Then what nothing.

Life would go on as if none of this had happened. She bit her bottom lip.

“Oh, no,” Sasha said. “Oh, hell no. I know that look. Damn, it, AB, I warned you about this.”

“Warned me about what?” But she already knew Sasha was on to her.

“You want to be fake engaged to Jesse. Or real engaged. Or whatever. Engaged. You want to be engaged to Jesse.”

“That is totally not true!” It wasn’t true. Nothing about being fake engaged to Jesse was in the least bit appealing. “I do not want to be fake engaged.”

“Or?”

“Or what?” She tried to look innocent.

“Real engaged. You don’t want to be real engaged. Repeat it after me.”

“Of course not.” Her gaze skittered over to the lake, unable to let Sasha see the uncertainty in her eyes. They’d known each other for over a decade, and since that first time they’d met at boarding school, Sasha had always been able to see straight through her.
